Herbs vs Botanicals: What's the Difference?

You'll find the words herb and botanical are often used interchangeably in discussions about natural medicine, so we wanted to clarify the difference between the two.

Typically, when we see the words herb or botanical used it is describing a plant with medicinal or therapeutic benefit.  An herb is a plant used for flavor and/or medicinal benefits whereas a botanical is the floral or plant parts used in products and medicines.

The word botanical often describes use of only part of the plant, whereas herb generally refers to a whole plant species.

Research favors whole plant approaches in medicine. A good topic of study related to this is Ayurvedic medicine, which is the ancient body of principles we use to guide our shop culture and product curation.
